Ergonomics is the discipline of adjusting the environment to the needs of the human, or in this case the workplace to the human. Mostly we think of improving comfort, efficiency or performance through this but also we can reduce injury risk and increase employee satisfaction.
However, ergonomics can be so much more, and the approach can be used to look at everything from office desks and workstations to industrial process, vehicles, acoustics, light, tool usage and general workplace environments.
Increasingly our approach is being used to help people with disability in the workplace and to support those with neurodiversity thrive at work.
Our approach is to visit the workplace and speak with all stakeholders involved and produce helpful solution orientated reports.
We have a short private chat with the employee to explain the process and to discuss any existing medical detail. We then proceed to the work area where often we are joined by a H+S or line manager to help obtain as much detail as possible about the issue.
We encourage ongoing communication and are happy to advise where a further referral to other professionals (healthcare or otherwise) is appropriate.
FAQ’s
What is the difference between an ergonomic appointment and a regular occupational health appointment?
A usual OH appointment is carried out by a doctor or nurse. They answer questions like fitness to work, application of EQ2010 and recommend adjustments. However, they usually conduct their appointments in a clinic environment or remotely.
An ergonomic assessment is always conducted face to face and in the environment that they employee works. Sometimes a doctor or nurse may feel that a full ergonomic appointment is required as it can reveal far more detail and accuracy about function. If both an OH appointment and ergonomic visit is carried out this can lead to a very comprehensive approach for an employer and produce the best possible advice for an employee.
Can an ergonomic assessment tell me if the employee is fit for their role?
It depends, usually we focus on getting detailed information and give an opinion on the suitability of any adjustments that are already in place. We may give clear advice on matters of safety or an opinion on the length of time that adjustments may need to be in place. Usually long term opinions on fitness for role are referred to the occupational health physician.
Can an ergonomic assessment give advice on risk assessments?
Yes, if appropriate. We have the ability to produce examples of assessment tools like RULA, REBA and ART for example.
Can a process or environment be assessed as opposed to an individual employee?
Yes.
How long will this take?
Usually a visit is around 90 mins. After that the report is usually ready in about two days and the standard occupational health guidelines are followed with regards to consent and prior viewing.
