Managing sickness absence
When there are concerns that an employee’s health is affecting their ability to do their job, it is advisable to refer them to occupational health so that the situation can be assessed, concerns can be addressed, and any necessary adjustments can be made. The aim is to support both the employee and the employer.
A management referral may be made when:
- an employee has a high level of sickness absence
- there is concern about their health
- there is concern about their performance
- the employer or employee suspects that work-related tasks may be aggravating the problem
- there are concerns about the employee coping with a return to work after a period of absence.
Our occupational health professionals provide a quality and timely service, often returning reports faster than the industry standard lead times, without compromising on quality.
We can fully manage ongoing health issues/rehabilitation according to requirements. Appointments can be face to face or telephone, as required with either a physician or occupational health nurse adviser. We can carry out appointments at our clinics in Llandarcy and Newport or in all day/half day clinics on site. We are also able to carry out home visits, where necessary.
Our referrals are triaged by a senior nurse to either a physician or an occupational health advisor. Our nurses may subsequently refer to physicians if appropriate. With regard to specialist mental health advice, we have a clinical psychologist who carries out regular clinics. We are also able to provide specialist telephone advice where appropriate.
We utilise our online eOPAS portal for management referrals. This is an effective tool for managing sickness absence within any organisation and can assist in helping staff to remain at work, who may otherwise require time off sick.
