Advice you can trust
If an employee cannot continue working due to sickness, they may be able to retire early.
Precise criteria vary from one pension scheme to another, but among other things, to qualify for early ill-health retirement benefits, an employee must typically:
- Be permanently incapable of efficiently carrying out the duties of their employment due to illness or injury, and
- Be permanently incapable of engaging in regular employment of like duration to their current duties because of the illness or injury
- Be under normal pensionable age.
We advise companies when an existing sickness absence case may be applicable for early ill health retirement. We advise businesses, local and central government and institutional pension schemes and perform up-to-date medical reviews on existing early ill health pensions.
